The goals and emphasis of the school

Hyrylä Junior High School is a school aiming towards all-round educational
knowledge and skills. The students are encouraged with positive atmosphere
to independency and co-operation as well as to respecting their environment,
culture and nature, especially in their own district. Hyrylä Junior
High School offers a safe and comfortable learning environment for all
the children aged 13-15 in the neighbourhood.
In
the school year 2003-2004 we have about 500 pupils. In addition to general
education, there are three special education classes. The working conditions
in the school for the pupils and for the staff are excellent, thanks to
the positive working atmosphere, as well as the renovated building and
good technical equipment. Hyrylä Junior High School shares the building
with Hyrylä Senior High School. The two school forms co-operate in
many ways, and also a part of the staff teaches at both forms.
7th grade
emphasises the importance of good manners and comfortable school environment.
The students study mainly compulsory courses. They are guided towards
a healthy way of living by e.g. giving information about healthy food
and about the health hazards of smoking and use of snuff. In order to
receive these goals a close co-operation with the students' parents is
essential.
8th grade emphasises legal education, which aims towards improving
traffic safety and preventing bullying. Attention is also paid to the
natural way of thinking. The environment theme is also taken into consideration
in connection with a special "waste and forest day". One third
of the students' lessons consist of elective subjects. This way the stormy
period of puberty can be helped with ways of learning.
In 9th
grade the international theme is combined with the knowledge of good
manners in various festive events. Practical training and visiting experts
of different professions guide the students towards further education.
Special attention is also paid to improving and maintaining a good work
morale. The students study many optional courses.
Each year
a musical is rehearsed in co-operation with High school. Co-operation
with High school is also continued in form of ceremonies and events.
Practical training
7th grade - Students work under the supervision of the caretaker
of our school. This way the students take part in helping to clean the
school area, copying and minor repairs. The objective is to familiarize
the students with the work of our whole staff, thus improving the atmosphere
and respect of the work.
8th grade
The students participate 1-3 days in different tasks of making and delivering
food in the school kitchen. This way the students get to know the way
how a big kitchen works, learn the meaning of hygiene and learn the importance
of healthy food.
9th grade
Students have two weeks of practical training. As a rule the students
are guided to seek work with local companies. The objective is to familiarize
the students with the working life. Practical training often leads to
good chances of a summer job in the company in question. This way the
working life in Tuusula and its neighbour towns becomes a part of the
students' lives.
